Short Description:
N-S and E-W aligned substantial wall foundation, partially robbed on eastern side, extending into Northern LOE of TR2 (W). Possibly pre-monastic
Issued to

Interpretation

    • Linear wall running N-S protruding 3.70m from Northern bulk of TR2(W). This wall is of an unknown function and has not been excavated as of 2021 season. It exists below a layer of rubble (2331) and is partially robbed of its facing stones on the northern face and likely truncated by as yet unknown activity on the souther end

    • Upon further investigation in the 2022 season, it was discovered that this wall is one of the earliest features within TR2W and may be pre-monastic. It is truncated by a number of other features including drainage channel F724 and grave F716 and does not at this point appear to truncate any earlier features. It was also discovered during 2022 that the wall seems to return a right angle to the west and may also continue further North than previously identified in 2021, albeit in a highly disturbed/truncated state. Upon the removal of one of the large facing boulders of this wall, a small sherd of Roman Samian pottery was discovered directly below. Whilst this find could be residual, its association with the wall is fixed. In order to provide more dateable evidence for the construction of the wall, a C14 date will be acquired for a small piece of animal bone discovered firmly embedded within the initial stone foundations of the wall (2411).
