Registered Find Basics

Interpretation

    • NAMESTONE Colour - mid brown with some reddy-brown patches and streaks. Shape - Upper part of a namestone with curved top, but with uppermost part of carved top missing/broken off. Bottom part similarly broken off and with straight diagonal break from upper left to lower right. Side 1 - Evidence of carving interspersed with markings resulting from damage. Carved double border on right side approx. 5mm from edge and approx. 5mm between lines. Carved shallow cross with central roundel and circular terminals on the side arms. Side 2 - Very worn with the stone becoming noticeably thinner towards the centre (32mm as against 59mm at the thickest part). Longest non-broken side has numerous red-brown streaks/marks that are unusually shiny. Weight = 2747g Dimensions = in excess of 227 x 174 x 59mm
