Narrative

    • This segment of predominantly mudstone wall was constructed on an approx E-W alignment. The form was of a very rough, unfinished, uncoursed, unbonded drystone wall foundation built upon an orangey yellow sand levelling/foundation layer. The wall itself extends beyond the eastern LOE of TR2W and the segment that was observed within the trench was truncated by both limekiln F217 and grave F715 - both of which can provide a date before which the wall must have been constructed. This wall must represent one of the earliest features in the trench stratigraphically, though at this stage no construction date has been established. A sample of charcoal was retrieved from beneath the stones of 2359 that has been highlighted as a priority for C14 dating. This wall lies in close proximity to a number of other walls (F723, F725, F726) that are also stratigraphically early features on site, although the difference in form and character suggests they are not all contemporary. One interesting observation is the similarity in form and character of this feature to wall F211 discovered in TR2E in previous seasons. This segment of wall is almost of the exact same build style and was also stratigraphically early. It returned a C14 date of late 5th to 6th centuries AD. Comparison of the C14 date from this feature to F211 would be very informative as to how contemporary they were. F211 was on an approx N-S alignment and, if the C14 dates are contemporary, could suggest F211 and F722 were part of the same structure.
