Short Description:
Flag stones

Interpretation

    • Flag stone area between two walls (3034 & 3037). Large flags are laid reasonably tightly between these walls, and they continue both East and West out of the trench, perhaps implying a longer surface, possibly a path.

    • To the North along the eastern section the surface of 3036 appears to continue with two flagstones and pebbled galletting between them. Above and between these stones is a deposit of clay that seems to have been used to level above these two additional flags, perhaps in advance of the laying of the upper flags.

Description

  • Large, relatively flat flagstones, with smaller stones between them. The majority are the same split, light yellowish grey sandstone, with several smaller mid blueish grey sandstone pieces. Approximately two thirds exposed, comprising of 22 stones.
  • Largest flag is 950mm by 550mm, smallest flag is 140mm by 140mm, with a few smaller galletting stones. The majority are approximately halfway between the largest and smallest flags.
  • Split flags, with no obvious signs of tooled finishes.
  • Randomly arranged, with average spacing of c.25mm. No bonding material beyond 3035.
  • Flagstone surface
  • W-E alignment
  • N/A
  • Length 2.11m Width 1.36m Depth 0.15m estimated
  • Due to the extremely good fit between 3034 and 3037, the flagstone surface is assumed to be temporally contemporary. Stratigraphically it was not earlier, as 3036 doesn't go beneath either 3034 or 3037.
