Short Description:
Cut of a possible flue/stokehole filled with sand and copper droplets inserted into metalworking pit F206
Issued to
Ben Swain | 30/09/2023

Interpretation

    • Cut of a square socket/shaft through the intact fill 2581 of metalworking pit F206. This cut was filled with material 2504 - a sand containing charcoal and burnt wood as well as copper droplets likely from the metalworking process. It is possible this shaft represents some form of flue or stokehole, perhaps even a bellows chamber. The sand was extremely heat affected near the base and at the edges - almost vitrified, suggesting it was in-situ at the time the pit was in use. This material was 100% sampled in the 2023 season due to its looseness and fragility and likelihood to collapse upon backfill/re-exposure in 2024.
