Short Description:
Recut of ditch F707 in north of trench 2 west
Issued to

Interpretation

    • Ditch F707 was initially hypothesised to have existed when hints of the edge of a large linear feature were observed in 2021 to the south eastern side of TR2W. This was partially excavated in 2022 but could not be completed and only one edge was observed in section. Upon further investigation in 2023, a huge and likely defensive enclosure ditch [2528] was encountered in an intervention in the northern half of TR2W, representing the continuation of the ditch first observed in 2021. This context [2505] likely represents a recut of this defensive enclosure ditch, highlighted by a V-shape outlined by rubble and various tipping fills that contrast with a much cleaner original clay fill of the first ditch. The slumping of early medieval features into the top of the ditch which stratigraphically places it as the earliest feature on site, combined with the sheer scale of the ditch, it is suspected at this point that the ditch is likely prehistoric in origin, potentially Iron Age. Samples have been taken from various fills for C14 dating to confirm/deny this hypothesis.
