Short Description:
Fill of small pit [2226] or dumping event/spread of waste metalworking material in the 'metalworking' area of Tr2(W)
Issued to

Interpretation

    • The fill of a possible smithy pit, likely used for copper or bronze working. The fill contained burnt wood and copper/copper alloy waste material formed of droplets. Within this fill there was a concentrated patch of burnt material/wood 100% sampled and given a separate context number (2229).

    • This feature was fully excavated and 100% of the fill sampled as sample no. 192 in the 2021 season. In accordance with excavation the previous season, droplets of copper alloy waste continued to be discovered, but no more of burnt wood (2229) was encountered. Due to the very small and shallow nature of the feature, and upon discussion with the project metallurgist, it is now believed that this feature is likely to represent a dumping event or small spread of waste metalworking material rather than in-situ evidence of a metalworking area or smithy.
