Interpretation

    • Unsure what this is, it appears to be a fill in pit F206 but it is currently not known whether this has been fully excavated. The fill seemed very similar to some deposits around the pit such as (2180) and (2181). It is possibly the basal fill of an anvil pit?

    • As of the 2023 season, it was discovered that this pit F206 was an intact metalworking hearth/pit that has been heavily truncated by burials. Three separate burials (F731, F734 and F737) were observed truncating through the metalworking pit and removing large parts of it. Consequently, Fill (2135) and all associated samples retrieved from it cannot now be considered a secure context related to in-situ metalworking due to possible contamination and mixing with other contexts as a result of the graves dug here. As of the end of the 2023 season, all burials truncating F206 have been fully excavated, revealing what remains of the in-situ metalworking pit - a central bulk and a slither on the northern edge of the pit. These remnants will be attributed new numbers in the 2024 season and an appropriate sampling strategy will be employed to retrieve uncontaminated samples from the in-situ metalworking remains.
