Basic Information
- Pit in NE of W side of trench 2.
Narrative
-
- A stone lined/capped pit in the NE corner of trench 2. The full extent of the feature was not seen, the length to the limit of excavation was 1.26m, the width was 0.70m and it was 0.49m deep. The precise function of this feature is unknown. The basal fill (2108) was an orange clay which is possibly indicative of some standing water in the bottom of the pit whilst it was open and the deposit formed due to that. The other explanation for the clay is that it was a lining for the pit. Above this was a densely packed layer of shells (2109) in the south of the pit, this is probably a midden deposit. The uppermost context in the pit was a potential stone lining or capping, this was made up of large irregular stones. Overlaying the feature was a deposit of animal bone not associated with the feature.
