Description

  • This refers to the amount of force needed to excavate or shape the deposit. E.g. Compact, hard, soft, firm, plastic, friable, loose.
  • We describe this a the base colour with its hue and a modifier. Modifers: Hue: Colour: Dark Yellowish Brown Medium Greyish Grey Light Pinkish Yellow Greyish etc. White etc.
  • See page 19.
  • This is anything in the soil that makes up less than 10% of it, for example stone pebbles, charcoal flecks etc. You need to describe the frequency that they appear (frequent, common, moderate, rare), the shape of the inclusions (rounded, sub-rounded, sub-angular, angular), and how well sorted they are (poorly, moderately or well).
  • Record the length, width and thickness of the context in metres to two decimal places. It should be formatted as below: Length - X.XXm Width - X.XXm Thickness - X.XXm Note: For layers and fills we measure thickness not depth.
  • Include any other information that may assist the description and aid in the interpretation of the deposit. E.g. on excavation, the percentage of stone inclusions increased towards the base of the deposit. A good thing to include for fills is which cut it is within.
  • Record the method of excavation for the context, and the weather conditions at the time. E.g. Trowel, mattock, hoe on bright, overcast, rainy, dry conditions.
