Short Description:
Skeleton within E-W aligned grave [2366] beneath base of limekiln pit F217
Issued to
Arthur Tucker | 26/09/2021
2098

Interpretation

    • This skeleton was fully lifted in 2022 after the full extent of the grave beneath the base of the limekiln was revealed and excavated. An E-W aligned skeleton lying on its right side with the head to the west in the Christian tradition places the burial within the context of the pre-Norman cemetery. At the very least, the grave must predate the limekiln, which itself has been dated to the 1090s.

    • A small part of a skeleton likely aligned E-W was discovered underneath the base of limekiln pit F217. Only part of a leg was exposed and not lifted in 2021 season. As this skeleton was capped by the limekiln, it must date pre-priory construction

    • Probable articulated skeleton within an E-W aligned grave discovered beneath the burnt base of the Norman limekiln pit F217, therefore pre-dating it. This burial was discovered after a small sondage was excavated into the base of the pit measuring 0.46mx0.42m and the articulated long bones expected to be part of the lower legs of an individual were observed. Due to the small size of the excavation area the skeleton was left in-situ as of the 2021 field season.
