Registered Find Basics

Interpretation

    • This potsherd belonged to a piece of Samian ware from the reign of Emperor Trajan between 98 and 117AD. Carved onto the base is the word ‘annami’ which indicates that the pottery piece was the property of a certain Annamus or Adnamus – a name local to modern Austria or Slovenia, but not previously recorded from Britain. Accessioned in the T Lord Collection.

    • "Form 18/31 base sherd with footring. Matres de Veyre, Central Gaul. Trajanic. The sherd shows a graffito cut after firing above the footring. [..] although the first letter is partly lost, it should read [....]ANNAMI, probably Annami '(Property) of Annamus'. The name Annamus/Adnamus is local to Noricum (modern Austria/Slovenia) and not previously recorded from Britain."
