- Bison (Bison priscus) metacarpal from Victoria Cave
Registered Find Basics
Interpretation
-
- This male leg bone is from an extinct type of bison and dates back around 115,000 years, to the last interglacial period. Surrounding finds of a hyena bone bed suggest that the bison had been hunted and the bone deposited by spotted hyenas. Found in 1872 in the lower cave earth inside Victoria Cave, the bone is currently archived in the Tot Lord collection in Yorkshire.
