  • This was a hand dug test trench with a north south orientation and initial dimensions of 12m x 2m. Its purpose was to assess the character of the roundhouse, to identify any associated archaeology, stratigraphic relationships and to recover dating evidence. The stone built roundhouse visible was partially revealed along with numerous related features. At it’s northern end a portion of a ditch running WNW to ESE was found that may have represented the building’s drainage gully. The roundhouse’s structure was not as well preserved as the structure in trench 1. It was mainly visible as a terraced surface within which were spreads of tumble presumably representing the redeposited remains of the house’s walls. These were most significant on at the southern edge of the roundhouse. Within the roundhouse at was found one stone packed post hole and 3 other potential post holes. Furthermore at the southern edge of the roundhouse as found a substantial stone filled ditch which itself abutted a square cist like feature made of four standing stones but without a cover. It is possible this feature’s top stone was represented by a large quartz stone placed nearby which may have been moved following earlier robbing of the cist.
