- Trench one
- This was a hand dug test trench with a north south orientation and initial dimensions of 15m x 4m. An area of approximately 3m by 2m in the trench’s north east corner was left unexcavated due to the presence of a tree whose roots would have disturbed any archaeology present such that the trench had a slight L shape. The trench was extended to its west a further 5m although a 1m wide baulk was left dividing this extension from the initial excavation area. Its purpose was to assess the character of the roundhouse, its relationship to the enclosure ditch, to identify any associated archaeology, stratigraphic relationships and to recover dating evidence. The stone built roundhouse visible above ground was fully revealed. To its north and northeast the trace of a circular ditch was found running just outside the circuit of the roundhouse’s stone wall which likely represents a ring gully for the structure. This ring gully was found to run under the upcast bank of the enclosure surrounding the prehistoric settlement, the bank of which was made of several phases of deposit dug from the enclosure’s ditch. Only a few features were found within the roundhouse, including a solitary stone packed post hole, a possible hearth, and a discrete deposit of potsherds within the east of the roundhouse close to its wall. The house itself had several further prehistoric and roman pot sherds found as an irregular spread from its interior. In addition a second potentially circular structure was found in the south east of the Trench 1 made visible as one quarter of a faint ring fully. This is likely to be all that remains of a further roundhouse, which was possibly earlier than the standing stone structure.
