  • Test Pit 4 was placed along the western field boundary in order to target a sinuous high resistance feature identified through the geophysical survey. It was excavated to a depth of 0.73m below ground level. The earliest layer excavated was a compact reddish brown silty clay (4003) containing degraded sandstone inclusions. On top of this was a layer of subsoil (4002), comprising an orange brown silty clay with small pebbles and angular stones. A single sherd of medieval, early to mid 12th to 16th century pottery (Minety-type Ware) was recovered from the subsoil (4002). Topsoil (4001) was the latest layer recorded and consisted of a 0.18m thick, greyish brown sandy silt.
