Narrative

    • There may have been a later blocking or levelling event at the northern end of the wall visible in the trench. This is F304 and consisted of a rubble spread (3013) and possible wall (3019). There was also a concentration of cobbles (rounded and sub-rounded stones) in this corner (3002). It is not certain whether this was associated with the other rubble (3013) or whether it is a part of the general overlying rubble and gravel layer F309 which will be discussed below. (3019) was initially interpreted as a continuation of the wall F302 or another abutting wall. However upon excavation it appeared to be floating within a context and appeared a much poorer construction. (3013) was a rubble layer that initially appeared to be poorly sorted and then once the upper part was excavated it was observed to be well sorted, especially nearer the potential wall (3019). This indicated that it may be intentional placing of rubble rather than a collapse or demolition layer. Within (3013) a piece of worked stone was discovered (SF54), this may have been a part of a door frame, it was recorded on site and not retained. This further supports the possibility that F304 may be an entrance way with a slightly raised or levelled threshold. The levelling may have occurred because the bedrock here was higher than elsewhere.
