Narrative

    • The latest feature in Trench 3 was a very large pit in the centre of the trench. This pit was cut into the bedrock and wall F302. After the upper fill (3007) was excavated large amounts of burning was seen in the pit. A large fire had taken place which caused the upper 3 fills to be massively heat affected. Directly below where the fire may have been was (3017) a very compact baked clay, beneath that (3014) was a bright reddish-brown silty clay and then under that was a dark reddish-brown silty clay (3015), this went down to a depth of 0.50m. Under the burning was a rubble fill with stones that did not appear to be heat affected and a silty clay fill which again showed no signs of burning. This indicates that the fire may have occurred very late on in the life of the pit after it had already been filled in. The full extent of the pit is unknown, as is the function, however it may have been a quarry pit as it was cut through the bedrock and contained very few finds. Any finds that were recovered from the pit are likely to be residual.
