Interpretation
-
- Wall appears to have been constructed directly onto bedrock in the mid section of the trench. As the wall runs northwards, a band of foundation layer becomes thicker, perhaps indicating a levelling attempt. This is particularly evident where the wall narrows, maybe suggesting a later phase of rebuilding. Faced stones are intact throughout except on the southern end of the west facing face, where rubble tubble spreads into section, could be very localised robbing for faced stones or collapse event. Wall is significantly truncated on southern end of trench by circular feature. Stones become heat affected, cracked and reddened. Wall is either deliberately cut by activity or burning event significantly damages the stone causing wall to degrade in this area. Lack of definitive floor surfaces make it unclear whether the trench has targeted the inside or outside of a building. Either way, the size of the wall indicates a substantial building, possibly a hall. At this point in time, no associated E-W aligned wall has been found though relationship between this wall and rubble spread 3013 and possible wall 3019 indicates a potential later phase of activity, with the latter contexts perhaps showing a blocking off event of a doorway (tentatively).

- Also note only single course of wall along most of its length indicating we are looking at lowest foundation layer. Robbing of walls was extremely thorough in this area of the site. This explains why we haven't found any significant floor surfaces as they would have been very close to the current topsoil level.

- Worth noting that both walls 3025 and 3026 are on a very similar alignment to this wall. When we uncovered these latter walls, we speculated that we would see a continuation of them northwards to connect walls together but we did not find evidence of this relationship. It's difficult to say whether we are looking at two separate walls or whether the mid section of one continuous wall was damaged by the later truncation of the circular feature so completely.

Description
- Grey limestone blocks. Some blocks discoloured red due to heat exposure particularly on southern end on east facing side.
- Length; 0.42 Width; 0.30 Thickness; 0.09
- Roughly dressed with clear facing. Rubble core very rough.
- Only one course of wall remains in most places, fairly unevenly coursed.
- West facing side evident continuously, east facing side evident until truncated by the circular feature
- Some patches of white grey lime mortar evident on faced stones and in rubble core
- Length; 10.10 Width; 1.10 Thickness; 0.29
- Although wall is continuous throughout its length, it does narrow towards north end of the trench with an abrupt corner.
