  • Trench 9 was positioned directly to the south of Trench 8 over a raised area of land thought to have been formed by the spoil heaps from previous excavation of the site in the 1920s and 1980s. It comprised a 3 x 3 metre hand dug trench, positioned above the presumed course of the reredorter drain identified in Trench 8, running downslope towards the southern site boundary. The topsoil layer (9001) was defined by a mid grey-black soil and a variety of modern artefacts were discovered including bottle caps, a rusted Yale lock and a Hula Hoops crisp packet dated to 1989 from ‘Back to the Future’ text printed on the reverse. Once removed, a series of interleaving layers and negative cut features were observed, and were excavated in section and sondage down to the natural clay.
