- Jetton
Interpretation
-
- This artefact - a Medieval copper alloy French Jetton - was discovered from much lower in a post-dissolution demolition layer (7011). Introduced in 1340 by Philip VI (1328-50), this example probably dates to between 1340-1380 AD. On the obverse the inscription is illegible, probably a royal crown with large central fleur-de-lis with trefoil ornamentation across the body or shield of France type. On the reverse, triple stranded straight cross fleuretty can be seen within a four-arched tressure
