Interpretation

    • This intricately carved bone knife handle dates to 1550 – 1600 AD. The handle has been decorated with an incised geometrical pattern designated as cross hatching. The handle is oval in section and is hollow to secure the tang of the blade. The handle expands to the top with to drilled holes and diagonal cuts and then to a pointed knop. It has been noted that the handle shows similarities with cutlery handles found on the Mary Rose.
