Narrative

    • A potentially square stone platform was constructed during the construction of Leiston Abbey. The stones in this pavement did not create an even surface such that this is likely to have been a foundation platform, not a floor surface, while its edges are similarly irregular negating the likelihood of it being a wall. After the platform’s construction a thin layer of well graded pebbles and then 0.3m of sand were placed on top of the stone. This might have been due to a flood event or the deliberate levelling of the feature for the placement of a column. After the feature was then covered by subsequent features and topsoil.

Dating Narrative

    • The construction of the feature is contemporaneous to the construction of Leiston abbey however the sandy fill at its top might either be from this same period or be placed after the site’s destruction if confirmed as the result of a flood event.
