Basic Information
- A pit or plinth possibly to act as the foundation for a feature within Leiston Abbey
Contexts
Narrative
-
- A pit was cut and then filled with dark soil with a large proportion of well chipped stone inclusions. This forms a square feature and while it was not possible to determine whether this represented a pit the inclusion of pebbles suggest this was used as a plinth. It relation to F2501 would support such a role which would have served as the foundation for a feature within the original siting of Leiston Abbey. However the feature that sat above this was then robbed with the Abbey’s final destruction such that this represents a phase in the Abbey’s construction.

Dating Narrative
-
- The excavation was unable to completely excavate the feature to find material culture that might date the feature. However the location of the F2503 and its fill’s inclusions would suggest it formed a foundation feature built during the construction of Leiston Abbey which was occupied between 1182 and 1363.
