Interpretation

    • This copper alloy French Jetton was recovered from the fill of a post-medieval rubbish pit, which is conducive to the deposition of this find. A jetton of the ship/shield type, this was most likely struck in Paris in the reign of Charles VIII (1483-1497). Obverse: galleon ship and four flour de lis within a diamond. Reverse: Profile view of a sailing ship. Both sides appear to be surrounded by different legends in a nonsense Lombardic script.
