Interpretation

    • Cast copper alloy double-loop oval buckle frame with a flat base and a convex profile in cross-section and a simple, narrowed, central pin bar. The frame has bevelled inner edges and rounded ends to the loops which have serrated outer edges. Each loop has eight filed grooves, giving the outer edge of the loop a cusped appearance. There is also a wider filed pin rest on the inside edge of each loop. The pin is now missing. The length is 30mm; width is 26mm, thickness 3mm and the weight 5.14g. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar spectacle buckle on page 60, no.354, which is dated from c.1450-1600.
