Narrative

    • Although feature boundaries were extremely diffuse, the original moat cut [4011 & 4013] was identified on both the northern and southern ends of the trench. This had been filled originally by a water lain deposit (4020) which was identified in the base of the trench at the limit of excavation and showed no indication of reaching the base of the feature. This deposit had been truncated by a series of more recent machine-made recuts, likely to have been constructed to clear out the ditch to create a functional drainage ditch for adjacent properties.
