Narrative

- A stone layer was found which was thought to truncate F2501. This is likely to be the result of field clearance in the zone during improvements after the destruction of Leiston Abbey. The stone included was poor quality local to the zone (hence it not being robbed for the second abbey’s construction) and left in a diffuse pile until excavated.

Dating Narrative

- Below F2502 was a 0.3m thick sandy deposit covering another stone platform. This sandy deposit is thought to either be a means of levelling for the foundation or the result of a flood event due to the layer of graded stones found. As such F2502 must be later than the construction of Leiston. Similarly this feature truncates the robber trench F2501 such that it must also be latter than this phase of activity as such it is likely to be the result of field clearance after the destruction of Leiston Abbey yet no cultural material was found which could date when this occurred.
