Interpretation

    • Waterlain deposit. Very likely part of much larger moat fill. All recorded ditch features are cut into this layer. Cut wood found within at depth of approx 1m (see section). Wood sample (401).

    • Originally forming as a water lain deposit as part of the main moat feature. A small piece of natural wood was identified at the base, indicating that it was not natural. This deposit was not fully excavated to the depth and logistical constraints of the trench.
