Narrative

    • This feature was an iron age ring ditch, or enclosure ditch, the function of which is unknown. As there were no internal structural post holes associated with it one can not say for sure that it was a ring ditch for a roundhouse. However it is possible that the post holes have been lost and truncated away, but this seems unlikely due to other ephemeral features being visible in other areas of the trench. The other argument against the roundhouse theory is the entry point facing the west rather than the more typical east. There were three pits in the centre of the ring ditch, one was large and deep (F#534), this was slightly off centre. The other two pits are closer to the entrance, one (F#640) was a moderate sized Iron Age storage pit which cut a much smaller pit (F#641). There was nothing to indicate that these pits were related to ring ditch other than the fact that they were within the feature. The ring ditch itself had two phases, a cut and a later recut that occurred throughout the ditch. The initial cut was steep sided, almost V shaped and had a very narrow flat base, this cut contained one or two fills, where a second fill was present it was a lens of redeposited natural. The recut of the ditch is most visible in these slots. The recut contained a single fill throughout. Slots were excavated at both termini and every other two meters, eleven interventions were made in total. The southern terminus cut a series of pits F#541, 542, 543 and 544. In the south eastern section of the ditch it cut an earlier NE-SW ditch F#537. The ring ditch was bisected by the roman boundary ditch F#511.
