Narrative

    • An east to west Roman boundary ditch running for the entire length of trench 4 (103.85m) and probably continuing into trench 5/6 seen in that trench as F#511. It is one of the latest features in the trench, the only Features that cut it are the corn dryer (F#933), a large roman pit (F#956) and the roman building. At the eastern end of trench 4 it was 1.67 meters wide and 0.80 meters deep and at the western end of the trench it was 2.50 meters wide and 0.86 meters deep. In the middle of the trench it was 1.70 meters wide and 0.89 meters deep. It contained three fills, all of which were very finds rich. At the western end of the ditch a cache of late third century coins was discovered (sf#13). Other small finds discovered in the upper fill include 16, 23, 26, 28, 31, 32, 34 and 79. These are mainly coins, but also include part of a small spoon, part of a large spoon or ladle, and a copper alloy brooch.
