Narrative

    • A large bell shaped pit in the west of trench 5, cut by a roman ditch F#515. The cut [6258] of the pit was sub-circular with steep bell shaped sides and a flat base. It had a length of 1.66m, a width of at least 1.63m (the full width not seen because of the truncation) and a depth of 0.65m. The pit contained three fills. The basal fill (6259) was sealed by redeposited natural (6269). It was likely an initial fill when pit was first in use and contained the highest density of pottery. Fill may be a reflection of a storage/ dumping phase of the pit? The secondary fill (6269) was redeposited natural and had large stone inclusions. The second layer of activity, it may suggest an intentional dumping layer? Layer has a lining of large stones, which have been disturbed by the burrowing activity, but could suggest an intentional sealing of previous layer for continued use as storage. The top fill (6270) was the final phase of pit, possibly intentional backfill after the pit was abandoned.
