Narrative

- An Iron Age storage pit containing two fills. The pit had a diameter of 1.28m and a depth of 0.50m. The basal fill (5138) was a compact dark grey brown silty clay with marly chalk inclusions, small to medium stones and charcoal flecks. Within this fill a neonatal skeleton was discovered, which upon excavation was discovered to be three individuals. The skeleton appeared to have been placed in the foetal position tucked in the side of the pit on its eastern edge at the base, it was facing east. The secondary fill was a moderate to loose grey brown silty clay with moderate small to medium stones, occasional charcoal flecks and burnt stones. The pit in itself is a fairly standard Iron Age storage pit, however the presence of the neonatal skeleton is more unusual. There was one other pit with a neonate placed in the base discovered in these excavations, F#439 in trench 4, and in previous excavations another was found.
