E-W aligned burial between ditches near building

Interpretation

    • East - west aligned skeleton in burial [4556]. Skeleton is of an infant in supine position, with the hands rested together on top of the pelvis. Skull is facing towards the north. A lot of the grave has been truncated by the machine, so the skull has been recovered in fragments.

    • 1 chunk of date-able BM recovered from fill. Sample <26> has been taken from around the skeleton, <27> from the abdomen area during cleaning and recovery, and <28> from beneath the skeleton after recovery.

Description

  • Skeleton is east - west aligned in a supine position, lying on its back with arms lying by its side and hands rested on the pelvis.
  • Head is placed at the western side of the grave, and appears to placed looking to the north. Skull has been truncated during machine stripping of the site so is only fragmentary.
  • Humerus is slightly elevated above the rest of the body, which could suggest torso is slightly leaning towards the north however this is likely a result from post-burial interference. Right is placed with the left over the pelvis.
  • Left arm is lying by its side with left hand crossed over the pelvis. All hand bones have fallen into the pelvis area.
  • Half of tibia and fibula have been truncated by the machine during stripping of site, including all the feet.
  • Only the femur remains of the left leg. The rest has been truncated by the machine.
  • A few feet bones were found dis articulated between the kneees of the skeleton. This could however been from the machine. No feet bones remain articulated at the east end of the grave.
  • Skeleton is of an infant, so many of the bones including the skull and ribs are extremely fragile, however most of the long bones are in good condition.
  • Skull only recovered in fragments as machine had smashed it during stripping.
