- Trench 6 was a hand dug evaluation trench positioned to the southwest of the mound’s apex running downslope and initially measured c 10m by 10m. An extension, measuring 1.50m wide by 2.50m long, was hand dug on the north western corner of this trench, in order to detect the continuation of the western edge of the ring cairn, found during 2016. A second extension was also placed on Trench 6’s south eastern corner to allow the full excavation of a feature that was partially placed under this trench edge. Trench 6 was placed to define the form of the monument’s core, its state of preservation, its relationship to the edge of the ring cairn features identified in the 2016 excavation and to assess whether the cemetery extended beyond the single cremation burial already identified. This facilitated further investigation of the original deposition of the Treasure, the complete excavation of a further cremation burial, and allowed the results of the 2016 excavation to be unified with the earlier UCLAN investigation. Archaeology dating to at least three discrete phase of activity were identified in this Trench. This included 3 Neolithic pits all of which contained fragmented sherds of prehistoric pottery and in one case two polished stone tools. Bronze Age activity was represented by a further urned cremation burial, two Bronze Age pits and a disturbed bank representing the South Western corner of a ring cairn. These features had suffered significant disturbance by more recent ploughing, evidence of which was seen by 6 parallel lines of rig and furrow represented by disturbed stone, which was likely to have been pulled from the ring cairn.
