- This was a hand dug test trench with an east-west orientation and dimensions of 2m x 25m. The trench was situated on top of the Bronze Age burial mound over the metal detector find spot and geophysical anomaly, and intersected with Trench 1 in a cruciform pattern. Its initial purpose was to assess the character of the barrow and any associated archaeology, stratigraphic relationships and recover dating evidence. Following identification of a ring cairn in the south of Trench 1, two sondages were also cut into the eastern and western part of Trench 2, two further sondages were excavated to investigate the potential continuation of the feature into this area. Parts of the cairn were found on both sides of the trench, as well as a cobble filled pit in the west (also likely to be of Bronze Age origin), and a backfilled Early Modern clay pit (visible as a geophysical anomaly) identified in the eastern end.
